COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course presents a survey of concepts, theories, and methods sociologists use to describe and explain the effects of social structure on human behavior, examined through a biblical lens. It emphasizes the understanding and use of the sociological perspective in everyday life. Students will learn how to critically analyze culture, socialization, institutions, and contemporary issues while integrating biblical principles of justice, community, and transformation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamental concepts, theories, and methods of sociology.
  2. Apply the sociological perspective to analyze human behavior in everyday life.
  3. Integrate biblical principles into sociological discussions of culture, institutions, and social change.
  4. Develop critical thinking skills for evaluating contemporary social issues through a biblical worldview.
  5. Strengthen communication and reflection skills through class discussions, written assignments, and

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  1. 23% of Grade: Quiz scores – each week includes a multiple-choice quiz worth 20 points to measure curriculum understanding. 160 total points are possible.
  2. 23% of Grade: Class Attendance, Advance Preparation, and Thoughtful Participation – Students are expected to attend promptly online weekly. Advance preparation for class discussion is expected as preparation impacts the quality of student responses.
  3. Thoughtful participation in class discussions and case studies is required. Each week’s discussion is worth 20 possible points. 160 total points are possible.
  4. 42% of Grade: Each writing assignment is worth 40 points, with 320 total points possible.
  5. 12% of Grade: A final written assignment due one week after the last class. The final assignment will be worth 40 points.

Total points possible – 680 points

GRADING RUBRIC

91% – 100% = A

82% –   90% = B

74% –   81% = C

66% –   73% = D

Below  65%  = F
