What is Psychology and Why Does it Matter?

Psychology is the study of the scientific discipline concerned with the examination of human behavior, including human development, motivation, emotion, perception, learning, personality, intelligence, measurement, and applied areas.

Why does this matter to the Christian? It matters because, in increasing numbers, the Church is turning to psychology for answers to the problems of human beings. I would define this as a crisis of faith. This is not to discount the scientific study of human behavior, human development, motivation, etc., when viewed from a biblical lens, but when Christians embrace philosophies of behavior that are contradictory to God’s Word, we must know that we are prescribing man’s cure instead of God’s healing for the human mind and spirit. Perhaps, except for the theory of evolution, there has been no scientific discipline so widely accepted and without cautionary examination as psychology.  Christians flock to psychologists and psychiatrists to cure what ails them, instead of seeking pastoral counsel and life alignment with God’s Word. The psychological contradiction to Christian truth can come in simple ways, including the problem of denying sin as a primary causative factor in diagnosing and treating man’s behavioral woes.  Christians who do not have a depth of understanding of God’s Word are prone to the deceptions found in the humanistic approach and therefore miss out on the curative power of God’s Word.

COURSE OBJECTIVES :

  • To equip Christian leaders with an understanding of the science of psychology as seen through a biblical worldview.
  • To gain exposure to various psychological theories and examine them through a biblical lens.
  • To deepen understanding of human behavior, including human development, motivation, emotion, perception, learning, personality, intelligence, measurement, and applied areas.
  • To equip Christian leaders with the biblical psychological practices, tools, and implementation strategies that enhance effective communication and ministry with God’s people.
