The book ‘A Dictionary of the Bible’, was originally put together under the editorial supervision of William Smith in 1863. It was a three volume set published in London and Boston. Later it was expanded to a 4 volume set, which was published in 1893 under the title ‘A Dictionary of the Bible comprising its antiquities, biography, geography, and natural history’.
Today we know this monumental work as Smith’s Bible Dictionary. It is a collection of over 4500 entries on words found in the Bible. It contains explanations that help place the people, places and events in their historical context. It also references the parts of the Bible which are relevant to each word.
